It’s a Thin Line

On life, joy and sorrow...

This weekend was a weekend of extremes that reminded us that our daily lives are a thin line. Dear friends of ours that live in Ottawa have a bonus daughter, a daughter that they love, have cared for and nurtured for a number of years. She is expecting her first baby and as their daughter lives in our home town, we offered our home to host a baby shower for her.

There was much laughter and celebration as gifts were presented, family heirlooms to be passed on to the next generation given, lots of pictures taken…some with the new video camera that will capture forever, images to be cherished. Everyone that attended the baby shower had shared one of those special moments in time…the expectation that surrounds the beginning of a new life.

After the guests had left and the house cleaned, we had an opportunity to relax. Around 8:30 pm we received a phone call from a member of our extended family. Her partner, that we knew had terminal cancer, passed away quietly at home while watching her favourite movie. Knowing that she was receiving hospice supportive care at home, had precious few days left, makes the news no easier.

Then, in this morning’s email and another phone call, the news that another friend and a business colleague, who also had terminal cancer and was also receiving palliative care, passed away the same day...Saturday.

To both families that are grieving, please accept our heartfelt sympathies on the passing of your loved one. Kibran in his book The Prophet wrote “When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy. When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.”

It’s a thin line…
